Abstract

ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON WOOD AND LAMINATE FLOORING

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS

U.S. wood and laminate flooring sales are estimated to be $4.4 billion during 2019, a 6.4% decline over the previous year. As a result, wood and laminate flooring could lose additional share in the U.S flooring and hard surface flooring markets. Wood and laminate flooring has been losing share in the U.S. floor coverings market since 2015. Wood and laminate flooring lost share due to increased competition from ceramic tile and LVT rigid core vinyl planks with wood looks. In 2018 and 2019, wood and laminate flooring sales has been adversely affected by the decline in domestic home sales. In addition, rising wood flooring prices in 2018 contributed to weaker demand. Currently, pricing pressure is being driven by rising tariffs in Chinese-made flooring. Rising tariffs on Chinese-made flooring have begun to shift the supply chain. In the wood sector, the supply chain is shifting to produces located in Vietnam, Cambodia, and other Asian countries. In the laminate flooring sector the supply chain is increasing its dependence on European producers. Even U.S. manufacturers of wood and laminate flooring is benefiting from these trends. Wood and laminate flooring manufacturers are also introducing more water- and wear-resistant floorings to increase their competitive position. This effort primarily benefited sales of engineered wood flooring. However, the rising acceptance of innovative LVT and continued sluggish housing demand could result in wood and laminate flooring losing additional share in the U.S. floor coverings market over the next five years.
