Abstract

ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON LUXURY VINYL TILE AND OTHER RESILIENT FLOORING

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS

U.S. resilient flooring sales increased sharply over the past few years as luxury vinyl tile (including WPC and SPC) made significant inroads in the U.S. floor coverings market.  During 2018, LVT sales are estimated to increase by 29.5% in dollars and could account for 11.6% of total U.S. floor coverings sales.  Strong gains has allowed LVT and other resilient flooring to regain share lost to other hard surface flooring with the introduction of ceramic tile planks, engineered wood flooring, and laminate flooring.  LVT manufacturers are taking back share by offering improved flexible and plank products, waterproof characteristics, and improved acoustics.  U.S. manufacturers have made significant investments in new U.S. LVT production capacity; however, soaring demand has resulted in Chinese manufacturers capturing some two-thirds of U.S. sales.  U.S. investment in additional production capacity could accelerate with the threat of new tariffs on products sourced from China.  This Catalina Report investigates company strategies on sourcing, product innovations, and pricing to gain a competitive edge.

LVT AND OTHER RESILIENT FLOORING SALES TRENDS

Catalina Research has uncovered these trends in our 159-page in-depth analysis of the global LVT and other resilient flooring market.  U.S. shipments, exports, imports, and price trends are evaluated for luxury vinyl tile (LVT), VCT, sheet vinyl products, rubber flooring, linoleum, cork flooring and other flooring materials.  Data is provided on a dollar and unit basis.  Catalina also reviews product innovations such as WPC and SPC to determine the future of this market.  Import data analyzes shipments of foreign-sourced products by major country of origin and their share of the U.S. market.  Export data analyzes foreign sales by major country of destination.  Catalina also investigated global demand.

END-USE MARKET PURCHASES AND DISTRIBUTION

The report’s end-use market analysis provides executives with the growing sales opportunities in residential, nonresidential, and transportation equipment markets.  Residential markets are further divided into new construction, residential remodeling, and manufactured housing markets.  Nonresidential markets are segmented into new construction and commercial contract purchasers.  Catalina used these data trends to calculate LVT and other resilient flooring’s share of total residential and nonresidential flooring markets.  Residential and nonresidential sales are further segmented by product type.  Retail sales are provided by channel.

FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND

End-use market trends are correlated with U.S. housing demand, nonresidential construction spending, mortgage interest rates, and other housing and economic indicators to uncover the factors affecting demand, and provide insights into the direction of domestic demand in 2019 and beyond.

PROFIT MARGINS AND THE COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT

In addition, Catalina Research examined the cost structure and profitability of U.S. resilient flooring plants.  Data trends are compiled for material, labor, and capital inputs.  As part of this analysis, Catalina profiled 13 U.S. manufactures and marketers, and compiled company LVT and other resilient flooring sales.  Catalina used this information to calculate global and U. S. market shares of the leading competitors.  Company profiles cover product lines, manufacturing and distribution, capital investments, acquisitions, and new products.  Executives are urged to review the growth- and profit-oriented strategies of leading worldwide LVT and other resilient flooring manufacturers and compare their company’s own performance to the industry averages.

WORLD LVT AND OTHER RESILIENT FLOORING MARKET

The global LVT and other resilient flooring market is investigated as well.  As part of this analysis, plastic flooring exports are tracked.  The report includes Chinese- and Korean- made plastic flooring exports by major country of destination.  Global market shares are calculated for 18 leading manufacturers.
