Abstract

ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA MARKET ANALYSIS REPORT ON CABINETS AND COUNTERTOPS

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The U.S. cabinetwork and countertop market has seen a moderation in their five-year sales decline. Manufacturers and marketers are beginning to see the beneficial affects of a more stable residential remodeling market, homeowners undertaking do-it-yourself remodeling projects, and increased sales to commercial remodelers. Consumers, however, remained cautious, searching for value-priced products. This has benefited home centers and other big box channels. On the other hand, the builder market remains a drag on demand since single-family home starts continue to decline at double-digit rates. As a result, industry profit margins remain under pressure, even for the leading manufacturers. This will result in industry consolidation for a few more years, until cabinet and countertop sales begin to show signs of a significant rebound.

CABINETWORK AND COUNTERTOP SHIPMENT TRENDS
Catalina Research has uncovered these trends in our 149-page in-depth report on the U.S. cabinetwork and countertop industry. Report sections cover the U.S. market for kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, other cabinetwork, and countertop materials. Cabinetwork shipments are further segmented by stock line, semi-custom, and custom cabinets, and by wood and laminate kitchen cabinets. Countertop shipments are provided for plastic laminated, solid surface, dimension and engineered stone countertops, and other countertop materials. Price trends are provided for all types of cabinetwork.

END-USE MARKETS AND DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS
Cabinetwork purchases are provided for new residential construction, residential remodeling, manufactured housing, and nonresidential construction markets. The analysis includes data on purchases per new single-family home constructed and new multi-family housing unit built. Home center and other retail channels are analyzed as well. A separate section analyzes cabinetwork and countertop retail sales by region and state. Region and state retail sales are further segmented for home centers, non-manufacturing kitchen and bath retailers, and retail-manufacturers.

FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND
Catalina analyzes the role of new and remodeled residential kitchens and bathrooms as a determinant of demand. The number of bathrooms per new housing unit is calculated by type of housing unit and region. Homeowner kitchen and bathroom remodeling is investigated by demographic characteristic. Cabinetwork and countertop demand is correlated with U.S. housing demand, nonresidential construction spending, mortgage interest rates, and other economic and demographic indicators. This provides insights into the direction of domestic demand in 2011 and beyond.

PROFIT MARGINS AND THE COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT
Catalina Research examined the cost structure and profitability of U.S. cabinetwork and plastic laminated countertop plants. Data trends are compiled for labor, material, and capital inputs. As part of this analysis, Catalina Research uncovered the manufacturer and marketing strategies for the leading competitors. Sales data was compiled in order to calculate cabinetmaker market shares.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE ACTIVITY
The report also reviews the inroads made by foreign-made cabinetwork. Import data is provided for major country of origin. Similar data is available for export shipments.

Catalina Research provides in-depth market research on construction materials, building equipment, home furnishings, consumer products, industrial equipment, energy and infrastructure products and other industries. Each complete report or study section includes information on market size and growth, end-use markets, distribution channels, international trade, plant profitability, the competitive environment, and leading company strategies. Catalina Reports are used to evaluate a market's growth prospects and profitability, investigate target markets, gauge the potential of new products, and uncover acquisition candidates.
