The
Catalina Report on Plumbing Fixtures and Fittings is a guide
to growth- and
profit-oriented opportunities in metal, vitreous china,
and plastic plumbing fixtures
as well as all types of plumbing fittings. This comprehensive
database covers U.S.
shipments, imports, price trends, end-use markets, distribution
channels, exports
and the Canadian market, cost-structure of domestic plants,
and the competitive
environment. In addition, leading manufacturers and marketers
are profiled in order
to review major competitor strategies.
The
overall U.S. plumbing fixture and fittings supply (shipments
plus imports) is
analyzed in the Executive Summary section (Section 1). Catalina
compiled U.S.
Department of Commerce shipment statistics and imports to
calculate the supply.
The supply is also calculated for plumbing fixtures by material
and all type plumbing
fittings and trim. Shipment data are for all domestic manufacturers,
whether plants
are owned by U.S.- or foreign-based companies and whether
or not plants specialize
(50% or more of total facility revenues) in one or more
of they industry's sectors.
Price trends are compiled for each sector from the Bureau
of Labor Statistics
Producer Price Index. This data was used to calculate real
shipments which indicate
volume movements. Import data are derived from U.S. Customs
records. The
industry's profit margins were calculated as well, and compared
to the U.S.
manufacturing average.
Section
2 analyzes the market for metal, vitreous china, and plastic
plumbing
fixtures. Data include domestic shipments and imports. Shipments
and imports
are further segmented by detail material and product line.
Data trends include
enameled cast iron, gelcoat, acrylic, cultured marble, and
other fixtures, as well
as lavatories, water closet bowls and flush tanks, urinals,
bidets, sinks, bathtubs
and whirlpools, hot tubs and spas, shower stalls and wall
surrounds, and drinking fountains. Import data provides
foreign-sourced shipments by major country
of origin.
The
plumbing fixture fittings and trim market is analyzed in
Section 3. Shipment and
import data is segmented for single-lever controls, bath
and shower fittings, lavatory
fittings, sink fittings, drains and overflows, and other
plumbing fittings and trim.
Import data is also analyzed by major country of origin.
Section
4 evaluates end use market purchases and factors affecting
demand.
Plumbing fixtures and fittings purchases are provided for
new residential and
nonresidential construction markets, residential and nonresidential
remodeling
markets, manufactured housing and recreation vehicle markets,
and industrial
markets. Data is compiled and analyzed based on U.S. Department
of Commerce
surveys. Other Commerce surveys provide data on building
construction spending,
new housing starts and permits, number of bathrooms per
new housing unit
completed, kitchen and bathroom remodeling spending, and
other factors driving
demand. These data trends were correlated with the U.S.
plumbing fixture and
fittings supply in order to forecast future trends. Distribution
channels, export
shipments, and the Canadian market situation is investigated
in Section 5. U.S.
Department of Commerce survey data was compiled, analyzed,
and estimated to
provide a snapshot of plumbing wholesaler sales, retail
sales by type of outlet, and
plumbing contractor revenues. Export shipments by sector,
product line, and major
countries of destination are compiled from U.S. Department
of Commerce trade
forms. Canadian market sales, shipments, and trade data
are compiled from Statistics
Canada sources.
Catalina
compiled and analyzed data on plants specializing in the
manufacture and
sale of plumbing fixtures and fittings in Section 6. Data
trends include payroll and
material costs, the plant labor situation, and capital expenditures.
Section 7
evaluates the competitive environment. Catalina searched
annual reports, databases,
and trade journals for growth- and profit-oriented strategies
and recent
developments as well as company sales and profit trends.
This information was
organized into 29 company profiles (Section 8). Sales data
was extracted from
this valuable database to calculate market shares of the
leading plumbing fixture
and plumbing fittings and trim manufacturers and marketers.
Data tables also
provide statistics on the number of companies and plants
by industry sector.
In
addition, brands for six lines of plumbing products are ranked
from surveys
conducted by Professional Builder. The Professional Builder
2002 Brand Study
was conducted in February 2002 for purchases over the previous
12 months.
Brand shares are calculated for new home builders and remodeling
contractors.
For the six leading brands, shares are also provided by region,
cost of home,
number of units built or remodeled, and by home type. Shares
for these
characteristics that are above the U.S. average indicates
that the brand is
more likely to be used for that particular characteristic.
Brand shares add to
more than 100% since contractors report the use of more than
one brand.
Action-oriented
executives are urged to use this information to develop
new
products, take advantage of growing end-use markets, expand
foreign market
sales, and initiate profitable operating strategies. Executives
are urged to
compute their own company's market share and compare their
company's
own operating ratios to the industry averages as part of
this process.
