ABSTRACT FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON PLUMBING FIXTURES AND FITTINGS

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS

The $9.4 billion U.S. plumbing fixture and fittings market has experienced relatively
strong growth in 2002 and is expected to continue strong gains in 2003. Demand is
being driven by new residential construction and residential remodeling and
replacement markets. Sales are responding to low mortgage interest rates and rising
personal incomes as well as the rising number of bathrooms in new and existing
homes. The strongest growing industry sectors are metal and vitreous china plumbing
fixtures. Some of the sharpest gains are in the lavatory, sink, acrylic bathtub and
whirlpool, and hot tub and spa product lines. Industry margins, however, have turned
sluggish due to weak pricing as competition from foreign-sourced products rise.

PLUMBING FIXTURE AND FITTINGS INDUSTRY TRENDS

Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our 234-page in-depth report on
the U.S. plumbing fixture and fittings industry. Report sections cover the U.S.
market for metal, vitreous china, and plastic plumbing fixtures, as well as all
types of plumbing fittings and trim. In the Executive Summary section, Catalina
conducts a growth analysis in current and real dollars, and for U.S. manufactured
and foreign-sourced products. A comparative analysis of producer price trends by
material is also included. In addition, Catalina compares plumbing product plant profit
margins to the U.S. manufacturing average.

PLUMBING PRODUCT SHIPMENTS AND IMPORTS

This in-depth analysis has separate sections for plumbing fixtures and plumbing
fittings and trim. Each section covers U.S. manufacturer shipments and
foreign-sourced product shipments. In addition, import shipments are provided
by major country of origin. The section on plumbing fixtures segments market
data by type of fixture by type of material. Shipments are provided for lavatories,
toilets and urinals, sinks by type, bathtubs and whirlpools, shower stalls and wall
surrounds, hot tubs and spas, and drinking fountains. Each product line is further
segmented by material such as vitreous china, enameled cast iron, steel and other
metals, gel coat, acrylic, cultured marble, and other materials. Fitting product
shipments are broken out for single-lever controls, bath and shower fittings,
lavatory fittings, sink fittings, drains and overflows, and other fittings and trim.
Each of these market segments shows further detail by product line.

END-USE MARKETS AND DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS

U.S. plumbing fixture and fittings market sales are also segmented by end-use
market. End-use market sales are provided for residential and nonresidential
markets, new construction and remodeling and replacement markets, manufactured
housing and recreation vehicle markets, and industrial markets. Data tables provide
sales of plumbing fixture wholesalers, plumbing retailers by type of outlet, and
plumbing contractor revenues. An analysis of factors driving demand is provided
as well. Data trends include spending on new residential and nonresidential building
construction, total housing demand, housing starts and permits, number of bathrooms
per completed housing unit, kitchen and bathroom remodeling spending, mortgage
interest rates, and other economic and demographic trends. Export trends by sector
and product line and an analysis of the Canadian market situation is provided as well.

PLUMBING PRODUCT PLANT COST STRUCTURE AND PROFITABILITY

Catalina analyzed the cost structure and profitability of U.S. plants specializing
in the manufacture and sale of metal, vitreous china, and plastic plumbing
fixtures;and plumbing fittings and trim. This analysis covers material inputs,
the plant labor situation, and facility capital expenditures.

COMPETITVE ENVIRONMENT

Catalina profiled 29 manufacturers and marketers of plumbing products. We compiled
data and information from public company filing documents, trade journals, and
databases on product lines, manufacturing and distribution, acquisitions and capital
investments, and sales trends. Sales data was used to compute market shares for
the leading plumbing fixture and plumbing fittings and trim manufacturers. In addition,
brand shares are provided for six plumbing product lines. Brand shares are further
segmented by region, cost of home, number of units built or remodeled, and home
type. The goal is to uncover manufacturer strategies that are being implemented to
make inroads in this dynamic market.
