SUMMARY
OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The $9.4 billion U.S. plumbing fixture and fittings
market has experienced relatively
strong growth in 2002 and is expected to continue strong
gains in 2003. Demand is
being driven by new residential construction and residential
remodeling and
replacement markets. Sales are responding to low mortgage
interest rates and rising
personal incomes as well as the rising number of bathrooms
in new and existing
homes. The strongest growing industry sectors are metal
and vitreous china plumbing
fixtures. Some of the sharpest gains are in the lavatory,
sink, acrylic bathtub and
whirlpool, and hot tub and spa product lines. Industry margins,
however, have turned
sluggish due to weak pricing as competition from foreign-sourced
products rise.
