ABSTRACT
FOR THE CATALINA REPORT ON THE BUILDERS' AND CABINET HARDWARE
INDUSTRY
SUMMARY
OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The
$6.6 billion (manufacturers dollars) U.S. builder' and cabinet
hardware market is experiencing sluggish demand. Recessionary
trends moving through the economy is adversely affecting new residential
construction activity, nonresidential building spending, and furniture
and furniture production. As a result, manufacturers and
marketers are turning to residential remodeling and repair markets
to stimulate sales. Competitors are also increasing emphasis
on the relatively strong growing door hardware product lines such
as hinges, door closers, and exit devices. Manufacturers
are also expanding their electromechanical product lines to meet
the increased security needs of commercial and residential customers.
BUILDERS'
AND CABINET HARDWARE INDUSTRY TRENDS
Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our in-depth 247-page
report on the North American builders' and cabinet hardware industry.
Report sections cover the U.S. market for locks, door hinges and
other builders' hardware, cabinet and furniture hardware, plastic
hardware, and automatic door openers. Each market section
is further segmented by product line. For example, the lock
section provides shipment data for bored/cylindrical/tubular locks,
mortise locks, deadbolts, and electromechanical locks. All
sections provide data on product pricing trends.
INTERNATIONAL
TRADE ACTIVITY
Import data is included to evaluate the growing importance
of foreign-sourced builders' and cabinet hardware. Import
data is provided for a wide range of product lines. Import
data is also provided for major countries of origin. Similar
data is available for export shipments.
END-USE
MARKET ANALYSIS
Builders' hardware purchases are provided for construction
contractors, households, door and window manufacturers, commercial
property owners, and manufactured building producers. Purchases
are divided into residential and nonresidential markets and new
construction and remodeling and repair markets. The analysis
includes data on purchases per new housing unit started and purchases
per door and window shipped. In addition, the locksmith
market is reviewed. Hardware purchases are provided and
analyzed for 12 furniture and fixture markets including wood and
upholstered household furniture, office furniture, and kitchen
cabinets and vanities.
FACTORS
AFFECTING DEMAND
End-use market trends are correlated with U.S. housing demand,
nonresidential construction spending, mortgage interest rates,
and other economic indicators affecting demand. This provides
insights into the direction of domestic demand in 2002 and beyond.
Shipment trends for six sectors of the furniture and fixture industry
are analyzed as well.
PROFIT
MARGINS AND THE COMPETITVE ENVIRONMENT
In addition, Catalina Research investigated the cost structure
and profitability of U.S. builders' hardware and furniture hardware
plants. Data trends are compiled for labor, material, and
capital inputs. As part of this analysis, Catalina Research
profiled 17 leading North American manufacturers, compiled company
hardware sales and profit margins, and calculated market shares.
Company profiles cover product lines, manufacturing and distribution,
capital investments, acquisitions, and new products.
CANADIAN
BUILDERS' AND CABINET INDUSTRY
The Canadian builders' and cabinet hardware industry is analyzed
as well. Shipments, imports, and exports are provided for
locks, hinges, casters, and other builders' and furniture hardware.
